The enforced disappearance in this country is alarming, especially for young people between 15 and 29 years old. This event breaks the social bond and leaves mothers in a traumatic state. The purpose of this research is to triangulate the narratives of disappearance, filling in reportsand integration of the mothers into the collective. The results show that the experience of disappearance and the reporting processesare degrading, where the mothers are re-victimized, given the mistreatment of public servants. Beingthe integration to a collective a reparatory ideal, because the mothers fraternize in their pain and resistance in the searching. It concludes by inviting psychologists to seek ways of elaboration according to the experience of social trauma AU

RESUMO

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the lives of nurses. To capture these experiences, the AANP history committee sponsored a writing contest. The stories, essays, and poems were heartfelt and ranged from personal experiences to future implications. One essay entitled "The Five Stages of COVID Grief: One Nurse Practitioner's Coronavirus Story," captured the essence of the time and is applicable to all nurses as we continue our journey and document our legacy. Using the framework of COVID Grief, this article seeks to outline the shared experience and range of emotions represented in the writing contest submissions. Through this lens, the Year of the Nurse and the toll of coronavirus can be framed by the emotions of disbelief, bitterness, guilt, fear and anxiety, and resilience.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Psychotic disorders can exact a toll on both patients and caregivers. Whilst the desired teaching goals include gaining an understanding of the manifestations, neurobiology and treatment of these conditions, such concepts may appear abstract to medical undergraduates new to psychiatry before their clinical rotation. This study aimed to examine the use of patient narratives in teaching. Based on self-determination and Kolb's learning theories, it was hypothesized that intermediate processes (such as engagement, motivation, reflection) mediate narratives' effectiveness as a pedagogical tool. METHODS: Narratives in the form of stories of prominent individuals with psychotic disorders (such as John Nash) were incorporated in undergraduate teaching. Overall, 1014 out of 1500 (67.6%) medical undergraduates provided feedback over 2014-2018 through an anonymized questionnaire after the teaching session. Relationships between the use of narratives, intermediate processes, and overall effectiveness of session were assessed using correlation, regression, and structural equation modeling analyses. RESULTS: Most learners (97.2%) found that use of narratives helped them better appreciate the topic. Use of narratives correlated with better engagement, motivation, feeling equipped, reflection about the topic, and effectiveness as a pedagogical medium. The use of narratives was significantly predictive of ratings on these intermediate processes (all p < 0.001), which in turn mediated the relationship between narratives and overall session ratings. CONCLUSION: Consistent with adult learning theories, the use of narratives can improve appreciation of psychotic spectrum disorders via better engagement, motivation, and reflection within learners. Appropriate narratives can be incorporated into other topics to enhance undergraduate psychiatry education.

RESUMO

Objective. To hold a storytelling event and assess its effect on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students' perspectives on and attitudes toward reflection. Methods. Story Slam, a four-hour storytelling competition, was incorporated into the spring semester of the first professional year of a PharmD program. The event featured short first-person stories told by faculty members as well as students. Students were invited to participate in a pre- and post-intervention survey and focus group. An inductive qualitative analysis of the resulting data was conducted using textual and audio artifacts. Results. All 136 first professional year (P1) students participated in the 2019 Story Slam. Eleven students submitted qualitative pre- and post-intervention survey instruments and participated in a semi-structured recorded focus group. Thematic analysis revealed nine themes. Students' perspectives regarding the importance of self-reflection changed after participating in Story Slam, with students expressing a greater willingness to engage in self-reflection in the context of professional practice following the event. Students believed Story Slam created an environment conducive to reflection and engagement, resulting in strengthened relationships with peers and faculty members. Students expressed feeling a wide range of emotions as they shared their story and listened to the stories of others. Conclusion. Story Slam is an effective strategy for introducing P1 students to reflection, while also strengthening the school's reflective culture. Additionally, sharing stories may foster positive relationships and cultivate trust and respect between students and faculty members.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In order to address the stigma associated with hepatitis B, increase awareness, encourage testing, and promote prevention through vaccination, a storytelling campaign featuring people living with hepatitis B and their family members was developed. Storytelling campaigns have been evaluated for their impact on the viewing audience; however, few studies have examined the impact of storytelling on storytellers themselves. This study seeks to examine the experiences of the individuals telling their stories. METHODS: Trained researchers conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 23) with individuals who had participated in a hepatitis B storytelling campaign. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews produced four overarching themes: 1) Outreach; 2) Emotion; 3) Education; and 4) Stigma. The interviews demonstrate that participants found storytelling to be a positive, comfortable, and emotional experience, and that it motivated them to educate others and increase awareness. Additionally, participants identified the need to increase outreach and address stigma related to hepatitis B. CONCLUSION: While more research is needed, these study results can be used to enhance future engagement, training, and experiences of hepatitis B storytellers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Findings provide insight into how storytelling can impact the sharing their story and provide important implications for future storytelling campaigns.

RESUMO

In this article, we use a case to illustrate and discuss some practically important learning points about programming subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease patients and highlight clinically relevant issues resulting from anatomical and device-related anomalies. These include the phenomenon of a dominant subthalamic nucleus, clinical variability with delayed response to stimulation, equivalence of electrical charge when using short-pulse settings, and issues regarding conversion of settings between constant-current and constant-voltage devices that are increasingly common with the use of device components from multiple manufacturers.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of reading workplace bullying vignettes on negative affect. A within-subjects descriptive design and convenience sample was used. Fifty participants completed the Negative Affect Scale after reading written bullying vignettes and completed the Transportation Narrative questionnaire. Results provide evidence that the participants were transported into the vignettes. Additionally, descriptive statistics and a repeated measure ANOVA revealed a significant increase in negative affect over time. Written vignettes can provide a means to better understand how workplace events can impact cognitive performance. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

RESUMO

Science is facing a turbulent backlash in which it is often viewed as "just another opinion" among many competing unscientifically backed anecdotes. In these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, when guidance from public health epidemiologists and administrators is critical, it is incumbent on all of us to consider how we can use data to tell emotionally compelling stories aimed at improving public health. When informing the public about COVID-19 and other pressing public health issues, the author argues that we must begin with emotionally captivating stories, grounded in science. Supporting this approach is the work of psychologist Paul Slovic, who has shown that human beings are not only hard-wired to be story-driven, but that we are not, in general, moved by data. The challenge, then, is to tell emotionally captivating stories supported by data, especially in these divisive times.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The National Cancer Institute has acknowledged that for children, adolescents and young adults (AYAs), cancer is a leading cause of disability and death. This population has unique needs and until we fully understand those needs, we will not be able to provide optimal care. The purpose of this study was to understand the self-reported experience of cancer according to children and AYAs. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. After obtaining IRB approval, participants were interviewed in Spanish or English. Thirty interviews were conducted with children and AYAs ages 10-22. Questions were asked about the patient's treatment journey and the impact on their lifestyle. The interviews were recorded directly in digital audio files, then transcribed using Verbal Ink®. Themes were derived after the data were organized using Dedoose® and then coded. RESULTS: Children and AYAs described the cancer experience as difficult due to activity challenges and disconnection from school. Patients noted that their physical inactivity led to deconditioning. Children and AYAs reported storytelling as a way to cope with newfound disabilities. Patients reported that their illness allowed them to build closer relationships to family. Feelings on other issues arose, such as communication challenges experienced with transition from adult to pediatric hospitals. The value of altruism emerged as a way to provide purpose in their journey. CONCLUSIONS: Children and AYAs have particular concerns that the healthcare community needs to address. These qualitative findings have specific recommendations for practice.

RESUMO

This essay explores the regenerationist thought of Santiago Ramón y Cajal in his Vacation Stories (1905). Two stories of the collection, "The Accursed House" and "The Natural Man and The Artificial Man", can be read as an allegory of Spain at the end of the century nineteenth. In "The Accursed House", the indiano scientist Julián tries to convince Inés to adopt the same scientific perspective of the world that he has. Similarly, he sets out to regenerate his degenerated manor, to which he has given the suggestive nickname Villa Inés. The story serves as a model for the regeneration of Inés, who represents traditional Spaniards, and Villa Inés, which represents Spain. For its part, the story of Esperaindeo Carcabuey in "The Natural Man" offers a warning, as it tells of his failed life, which he links directly with his inferior education (impregnated as this was with metaphysics). Only by adopting Jaime's progressivism can Esperaindeo change the direction of his life. In both stories, Cajal links the reeducation of the characters with his more comprehensive interest in national regeneration. In view of the allegorical impulse of these stories, Vacation Stories constitutes a foundational myth on which Cajal constructs his vision of a modern Spain

RESUMO

Women are the fastest growing prison population in the United States. Women who are incarcerated are characterized by significant mental health needs and intense societal stigma. Despite such vulnerabilities, little is known about their experiences or the pathways that lead them toward recovery and rehabilitation. This qualitative research explores the lived experiences of incarcerated women sharing their stories with high school students and their teachers as part of a community outreach project entitled "Stories of Change." Six women were interviewed about what it was like to participate in the project. The data were coded and analyzed using phenomenological techniques, and the results were interpreted through a social constructionist framework. Five themes were revealed through an analysis of the interviews: (a) making a contribution, (b) connecting with others, (c) difficulty of telling their story, (d) identifying personal growth, and (e) moving forward. Storytelling is a powerful experience with lasting effects on the teller. This research explores the phenomenon of storytelling within a context of incarceration and stigma. These findings point toward the importance of providing programming to women within the criminal justice system that allows for meaningful interaction with normative individuals and opportunities for storytelling.

RESUMO

This article includes two studies investigating the impact of anecdotal healthcare information from the Internet on healthcare decisions. The availability of anecdotal information on the Internet through social media and peer support groups has increased the risk of the dissemination of misleading information. The first study investigated the effect of demographics, quality of life, health status and public reports usage on the use of anecdotal healthcare information from the Internet. The second employed a 2 (anecdotal information presented as videos supporting and contradicting public report information) * 2 (phase of introduction of anecdotal information: early, late) between-subjects experimental design to investigate the consumer's choice between two health facilities, the level of confidence in the decision, the knowledge acquired and the workload experienced. The results from the first study found that age, gender, educational level, health status and public report usage were significant predictors of consumer use of anecdotal information on the Internet. The results from the second suggest that the probability of making the optimal choice was reduced by more than half when contradicting rather than supporting anecdotal information was presented first. The data from anecdotal information became the anchor points for developing an understanding of the healthcare situation, meaning initial perceptions did not change after the presentation of the more reliable public reports. Because of comprehension issues related to public reports, consumers may give more weight to anecdotal information found online. Thus, new approaches are needed to ensure the former is engaging for a wide range of healthcare consumers.
